ABSTRACT

Severe COVID-19 patients may develop pulmonary fibrosis, similar to SSc-ILD disease, suggesting a potential link between the two diseases. However, there are limited treatment options for SSc-ILD-type diseases. Therefore, investigating pathological markers of the two diseases can provide valuable insights for treating related conditions. RNA sequencing technology offers high throughput and precision. However, the bimodal nature of RNA-Seq data cannot be accurately captured by commonly used algorithms such as DESeq2. To address this issue, the Beta-Poisson model has been developed to identify differentially expressed genes. Unlike the classical DESeq2 algorithm, the Beta-Poisson model introduces a Beta distribution to construct a new hybrid distribution in place of the Gamma distribution of the Gamma-Poisson distribution, effectively characterizing the bimodal features of RNA-Seq data. The transcriptomes of SARS-CoV infection and SSc-ILD disease in the lung epithelial cell dataset were analyzed to identify common differentially expressed genes of SARS-CoV and SSc-ILD disease. Gene function and signaling pathway enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network were used to identify common pathways and drug targets for SSc-ILD with COVID-19 infection. The results show that there are 50 differentially expressed genes in common between COVID-19 and SSC-ILD. The functions of these genes are mainly enriched in immune system response, interferon signaling pathway and other related signaling pathways, and enriched in biological processes such as cell defense response to virus and interferon regulation. Based on the detection of hub genes based on PPIs network, it is predicted that STAT1, ISG15, IRF7, MX1, EIF2AK2, DDX58, OAS1, OAS2, IFIT1 and IFIT3 are the key genes involved in the pathological phenotype of the two diseases. Based on the key genes, the interaction of transcription factor (TF) and miRNA with common differentially expressed genes is also identified. The possible pathological markers of the two diseases and related molecular regulatory mechanisms of disease treatment are revealed to provide theoretical basis for the treatment of the two diseases. © 2023 Editorial Office of Journal of Shenzhen University. ABSTRACT

In the post-pandemic era, cities are facing new demands and challenges. Both telecommuting and dense development require communities to provide more public space to meet people's psychological and physical needs. The insufficient space currently left in the city calls for stock development. The Japanese public libraries affected by COVID-19 are part of this stock. We aimed to determine and propose strategies for using the external space of libraries to enhance the sustainability of cities. Ultimately, we expect to achieve a synergy between public libraries and cities in terms of sustainability. We found that the most dominant element in the exterior space of Japanese public libraries is parking lots, which have the potential to be flexibly utilized in the post-pandemic era. We also summarized the current patterns of external space for public libraries in Japan. Finally, we proposed six strategies to enhance the sustainability of libraries and cities. These strategies can simultaneously enhance the sustainability of cities and public libraries from multiple perspectives, especially in the post-pandemic era. Our proposal will not only help to build or renew public libraries in the future, but also fills a gap in the urban perspective of Japanese public libraries and their external spaces.

ABSTRACT

The conventional drug design method focuses on the reductionist approach of simplifying complex things. Pharmaceutical development following this approach is thorough and detailed. However, it does not guarantee satisfactory results for all drugs. Systems theory, which explores the nature of things from a holistic perspective based on their integrity and relevance, has played a vital role in the prevention and treatment of major viral diseases. Based on the interpretations of examples of the holistic approach in drug designs at home and abroad, novel coronavirus infection demonstrates the advantages of combining reductionist and systemic theories in the research of antiviral drugs, with a view to providing guidance for the design and development of antiviral drugs as well as scientific solutions for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases.Copyright © 2023 Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate how value drivers of internet medical business model affect value creation through a configurational approach. The internet medical business model (IMBM) is such a business model that integrates online and offline medical services with the driving force of internet technologies covering prediagnosis, in-diagnosis and postdiagnosis. The outbreak of COVID-19 and the support of national policies have boosted the development of internet health care. However, there are still many challenges in practice, such as the unclear innovation path, as well as difficulties in landing and profiting. Academic research has not yet provided sufficient theoretical insights. Therefore, to better explain and guide practice, it is urgent to clarify the innovation path and mechanism of value creation for IMBM. Design/methodology/approachBased on the sample of 58 internet medical firms in China, this paper adopts fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the configurational effects of IMBM's value drivers on value creation. FindingsBuilding on the business model canvas and the characteristics of internet health care, five value drivers of IMBM are identified, namely, functional value proposition, emotional value proposition, user involvement, resource capabilities and connection properties. And the five value drivers form three configurations, which are, respectively, labeled as resource-driven configuration, user-operated configuration and product-combined configuration. From the perspective of the integration of traditional and emerging theories, such as resource-based view, internet economics and value cocreation, each configuration leads to value creation and improves value results with different mechanisms behind it. Originality/valueFirst, combined with the business model canvas and the characteristics of internet health care, this paper identifies five value drivers of IMBM, thus improving the relevant research on internet health care. Second, based on the configurational effects, this paper discusses the mechanism behind the configurational effects of IMBM's value drivers on value creation, thus expanding relevant research on the value creation of business models. Third, applying fsQCA and combining the advantages of qualitative research and quantitative research, this paper adds to the configurations of IMBM's value drivers that achieve high-value results.

ABSTRACT

Increased usage of chemical disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic may impact the chemical composition of indoor air in residential and commercial buildings. This study characterized gas-phase concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during multi-surface disinfection activities in a tiny house research facility. This unique facility provided a controlled, yet realistic environment for simulating whole-building disinfection events. VOCs were measured in real-time (1 Hz) in the bulk air of the tiny house with a proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS). In addition, particle number (PN) size distributions were measured with a high-resolution electrical low-pressure impactor (HR-ELPI+). PTR-TOF-MS measurements demonstrate that chemical disinfectant spray products applied to multiple surfaces can substantially increase indoor VOC concentrations. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. ABSTRACT

Enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare systems can be preempted by identifying patterns in diseases recorded in hospital visits over time. Disease multimorbidity or simultaneous occurrence of multiple diseases is a growing global public health challenge as populations age and long-term conditions become more prevalent. We propose a graph analytics framework for analyzing disease multimorbidity in hospital visits. Within the framework, we propose a graph model to explain multimorbidity as a function of prevalence, category, and chronic nature of the underlying disease. We apply our model to examine and compare multimorbidity patterns in public hospitals in Arizona, U.S., during five six-month time periods before and during the pandemic. We observe that while multimorbidity increased by 34.26% and 41.04% during peak pandemic for mental disorders and respiratory disorders respectively, the gradients for endocrine diseases and circulatory disorders were not significant. Multimorbidity for acute conditions is observed to be decreasing during the pandemic while multimorbidity for chronic conditions remains unchanged. Our graph analytics framework provides guidelines for empirical analysis of disease multimorbidity using electronic health records. The patterns identified using our proposed graph model informs future research and healthcare policy makers for pre-emptive decision making. © 2023 Association for Computing Machinery.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Despite that the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has been under effective control in China, the number of cases outside our country is continuously growing. So, the prevention and control situation is still grim. This study, taking the Department of Breast Surgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of Army Medical University as an example, was designed to analyze and summarize the operations of breast surgery in a comprehensive tertiary hospital during the epidemic, so as to provide effective reference and experiential practice for conducting safe and efficient breast surgery work during epidemic and post-epidemic periods. Methods: Thirty-seven patients with breast cancer admitted in the Department of Breast Thyroid Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Army Medical University during the COVID-19 epidemic period of January 31, 2020 to February 20, 2020 were selected. The data of the patients including the clinical characteristics, protective measures and treatment effects were retrospectively analyzed. The main points of methods for patients' admission to hospital, preoperative preparation, intraoperative protection and postoperative recovery, as well as the self-protection and psychological counseling of the medical staff were summarized. The effects of specialized treatment and epidemic prevention and control were identified by follow up. The details for how to improve the cognition of potential risk for infectious diseases, and how to strengthen the prevention and control of epidemic disease and occupational protection during the post-epidemic period were analyzed from the aspects of surgical indications, aerosol management and clinic protection in combination with the diagnosis and treatment characteristics of breast surgery. Results: Thirty-seven patients received surgical treatment after the exclusion of the risk of COVID-19. The mean operative time was (152.23±46.19) min, the average intraoperative blood loss was (85.23±23.47) mL, and no intraoperative blood transfusion was required in any of the patients. Among the 37 breast cancer patients, 19 cases underwent 6 to 8 cycles of preoperative neoadjuvant therapy, of whom, complete pathological remission was obtained in 7 cases after surgery. Prolonged fever occurred in 2 patients after operation, which returned to normal after isolation, body temperature monitoring and symptomatic treatment, and COVID-19 was excluded by nucleic acid testing for SARS-CoV-2. After follow-up, no suspected COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, cough and fatigue were noted in any of the patients or their accompanying relatives, and also no suspected cases were observed among the relevant medical staff. Conclusion: During the epidemic period, on the premise of scientific prevention and control, and full avoidance of COVID-19 infection in both doctors and patients, aggressive treatment can be provided to breast cancer patients according to the local epidemic situation. The principles of "scientific decision-making, and humanistic service" should be continuously followed, and the various prevention and control guidelines and management norms issued by superiors should be strictly obeyed, and the necessary elements such as prehospital screening, preoperative preparation, intraoperative protection and postoperative recovery of the breast cancer patients should be completed according to the actual situation. Rigorous compliance with the protection measures against epidemic in all aspects of the pre-admission and perioperative period of the patients, and coordinated relations of the epidemic prevention and control with the specialized treatment, may maximally ensure the safe completion of breast surgery and protect the health of the patients and medical personnel. © 2020 by the Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Due to the COVID-19, Chinese universities have moved their English courses online. Students took lessons through various online learning platforms, especially MOOCs. However, MOOCs' problems such as low course completion rate, poor learning engagement, and learning efficiency harm the education quality. This study explores whether Bilibili, an online entertainment platform providing English videos, has better affordances in online English learning. Through a comparative analysis of the two platforms using questionnaires and SPSS software, the results show that compared to MOOCs, respondents perceived Bilibili to have a higher level of interactivity. In addition, respondents regarded Bilibili's screen bullets to have more significant positive effects on their English learning than MOOCs' discussion forums, especially in triggering their English learning interest. Still, the difference is not prominent in learning English grammar. Based on the results, the study argues that universities should choose between MOOCs and Bilibili according to the different characteristics of English skills. © 2022 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an alarming accumulation of plastic waste. Herein, an integrated hydropyrolysis and hydrocracking process was performed to upcycle disposable masks into fuel-range iso-alkanes over carbon supported ruthenium (Ru/C). Experimental results indicated that catalyst type significantly affected product distribution during the hydropyrolysis and vapor-phase hydrocracking of disposable masks. Compared with zeolites-induced catalytic cascade process where up to ∼25.9 wt% yield of aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylenes were generated, a ∼82.7 wt% yield of desirable iso-alkanes with a high C5–C12 gasoline selectivity of 95.5% was obtained over Ru/C under 550 °C hydropyrolysis temperature and 300 °C hydrocracking temperature at 0.2 MPa H2. The cascade hydropyrolysis and hydrocracking process also exhibited high adaptability and flexibility in upcycling single-use syringes, food packaging, and plastic bags, generating 79.1, 81.6, and 80.3 wt% yields of fuel range iso/n-alkanes, respectively. This catalytic cascade hydrotreating process provides an efficient and effective approach to convert pandemic-derived plastic waste into gasoline-range fuel products. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

Rationale: Asthma remains a significant comorbidity among children with food allergy (FA). Longitudinal data on the course of asthma in this population, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, is lacking. This study aims to describe asthma management and control among children with FA during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Children with FA (≤12 years old at enrollment) were enrolled into FORWARD, a prospective, observational cohort study. Data from participants with FA and asthma who completed a 12-month and 24-month post-enrollment asthma therapy assessment were included (n=125). Surveys were administered between January 2019 - July 2022, which includes the onset and duration of COVID-19. Responses to the same questions at the two time points were analyzed using tests of exact symmetry. Results: Compared to the 12-month survey, caregivers at the 24-month survey more frequently reported that their children were not using their inhaler for quick relief (1.6% vs. 9.4%, p = 0.008) and were using their medication incorrectly (3.2% vs. 8.7%, p = 0.003). They less frequently reported that they were unsure whether their medications were useful (3.2% vs. 0.0%, p = 0.016). A similar distribution was observed when non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White participants were compared. No significant differences were evident when comparing symptoms. Conclusions: The symptom burden of asthma remained stable even during the pandemic. However, during this time, children with asthma were less likely to need a rescue inhaler and to be adherent to their maintenance regimen. Further longitudinal research on asthma management is necessary to better understand the potential impact of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

One–step preparation of electrospun bimodal fibrous membrane based on single nozzle is the key to the efficient fabrication of high–performance air filter. However, the preparation mechanism of electrospun bimodal fibers at low conductivity solution system is not clear, and there is a lack of evaluation methods for the quality of bimodal nanofibers, which limits the applicability of single nozzle electrospinning and the preparation efficiency of electrospun bimodal fibers. Here, three electrospinning processes at low conductivity solution systems of polyamide–6 (PA6), PA6 blended PVP (PA6/PVP), and PA6 blended polyethylene oxide (PA6/PEO) were studied according to the rheological properties and the fluid electrics (i.e., zeta potential), and the quality of the prepared bimodal fibrous membrane was creatively evaluated by R value. Inhomogeneous phase separations of the electrospinning jet along the direction parallel (x–axis) or perpendicular (y–axis) to the electric field were responsible for the formation of bimodal fibers. In addition, for the same solution system, the R value had a positive correlation with the air filtration performance. This work will greatly enhance the applicability of one–step single nozzle electrospinning for the preparation of bimodal nanofibers, improve the preparation efficiency, and promote the development of high–performance air filter. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

The present research examined the process of how determining the location and time of remote work, which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, affects workers' work-life balance, as well as their mental health. We also examined gender differences in the mediating effect of work-life balance. 1,692 employees of an IT company participated in our research by answering questionnaires with an online training system during November 2019 (Time 1) and May 2020 (Time 2). Participants' mental health were measured at both Time 1 and Time 2, while work-life balance and whether the location and time of their remote work was determined were measured at Time 2. Results of multi-group mediation analysis showed that setting the time of remote work led to better work-life balance and in turn, improved mental health. However, flexibility in the location of remote work led to better work-life balance and improved mental health. Moreover, a gender difference was found on the effect of work-life balance on mental health in that it had a stronger influence on female workers' mental health than male workers. © 2022 Japanese Psychological Association. ABSTRACT

Online learning has gained increasing attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers face social exigencies to design ways of knowledge dissemination in online instruction. We posit that understanding how knowledge can be represented in successful online academic genres can inform teachers on how they can design students' online learning experiences. This study examined how scientific knowledge is disseminated in one of the most widespread academic genres, TED Talks, which share discoursal similarities with other academic genres such as online lectures. This study adopted a systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis approach to explore how a presenter used speech, images, and gestures to disseminate knowledge. The analysis shows that a presenter orchestrates speech, images, and gestures strategically to clarify the scientific ideas and engage the audience. Based on understanding how the three semiotic modes are used to disseminate scientific knowledge in accessible and engaging ways, this paper discusses how insights on multimodal orchestration can function as a heuristic tool to inform design in online learning. © 2022 Jingxin Jiang, Fei Victor Lim.

ABSTRACT

Agricultural products live-streaming commerce (APLC), a new form of e-commerce with unique features sinking to villages and towns, has significantly promoted the sales of agricultural products in China during COVID-19. However, limited research has explored how the unique and common live-streaming commerce features affect customer behavior in APLC. Drawing on stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model, this study develops a research framework to examine how the stimuli (practicality, interactivity, preferential, and commonweal) affect consumers’ purchase intention through the mediation of organism factors (perceived trust and perceived value) in ALPC context. 216 valid samples were collected via an online survey. SmartPLS3.0 was used to verify the research model and hypotheses. Findings indicate: perceived trust and perceived value positively affect purchase intention;practicality, interactivity, preferential, and commonweal are positively associated with perceived value;practicality and commonweal positively influence perceived trust;interactivity has no significant effect on perceived trust. Potential theoretical and practical contributions are discussed. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
